Zoos

Menageries go back to ancient times, but the keeping of animals for research and public display dates from the early 19th century. London Zoo, for example, was founded by the Royal Zoological Society in 1828. These two items contrast the caged approach, typical of early zoos, with the large, open enclosures provided by many zoos today.
