Though the abbreviation ‘xmas’ goes back to late medieval times, and is found on Christmas cards of the 19th century, it does not appear to have been brought into popular use until taken up by advertisers in the 20th century. This board shows leaflets of retailers promoting ‘xmas’ gifts.
